(Call it men's fiction, action-adventure, military thriller or even a war novel...but Hell and Gone is not about Iraq or Afghanistan.)

Charles Mai

"This whole scenario is totally un-sat."
A Force Recon marine/Gulf War veteran who climbed as high as Gunnery Sergeant before his bigotry and brutality went too far, costing him his career. An experienced brawler who is ready to raise hell anytime, anywhere, for any reason (or no reason at all, for that matter).
Mai has never met a man he doesn't hate. This served him well for many years, but hasn't helped him adjust to "the world." He volunteered for this mission because he has nowhere else to go; but that won't stop him from burning bridges behind him, even now.

Tommy Scarred Wolf

"What's going on in this country?"
A highly decorated Special Forces Operator who lived up to his warrior heritage before and during Desert Storm, but returned to the reservation after the debacle in Somalia. He built a life, and a family, but is haunted in his dreams...especially since 9/11 and all the white man's talk of war.
The Special Forces taught him to speak Arabic, train armies, survive and bring smoke in any environment. This former Sneaky Pete is a weapons expert, a tactical savant, and a juggernaut in a firefight. To Tommy Scared Wolf, counting coup is not just some arcane practice of 19th Century plains tribes.

Jan Chin

"A dog fights harder with the scent of a bitch in heat on his nostrils."
A Chinese arms broker who works with the African National Congress and similar political interests. Cuban military advisors in Africa rely on him for ordinance and equipment during wars, civil wars and revolutions.
With a solid background in the People's Army slaughtering demonstrators in Tibet, Chin's become a trusted advisor himself. Khaled Ali depends on him for the organization of the camp's defenses. Having provided the tactical nuclear device, Chin takes an active interest in selection of the one to deliver it, and plans to remain with Ali until the weapon is successfully detonated.

Leon Campbell

"A grunt can sleep any time, anywhere, through anything."
He jumped into Panama during Operation Just Cause, then completed sniper training in time for the Gulf War. Now a civilian full-time college student, he toys with the idea of going back in as an officer. Since the attacks on the Twin Towers and Pentagon, he often wakes up with the notion of reinlisting, but talks himself out of it before breakfast.
A call from his old C.O. persuaded him to volunteer for this "private contractor" mission. A hasty evaluation with a sniper rifle confirmed that he is not too rusty to once again puncture vital organs with jacketed lead launched from great distances.

Yacov Dreizil

"When have Americans ever failed to feed the mouths that bite them?"
An agent of the Mossad sent into Sudan to support Israel's deep cover agent in-country. Dreizil ammassed an exemplary record in the IDF Airborne and the Sayeret Matkal ("Israeli Commandos" to the outside world). He has access to far too much scary information to be as waggish as the average Israeli. His mission cannot fail. It will not.
Dreizil has read files on Cavarra and every member of his unit. He doesn't trust them. American commitment to any objective lasts only as long as their MTV/microwave dinner/pay-at-the-pump attention spans will permit...and until their fickle, convoluted emotions pull them in a different direction. If his man inside the team can't pull off this miracle single-handed, Dreizil isn't afraid to get his own hands dirty.

Sam DeChalk

"Locked, cocked, and ready to rock!"
A career mercenary with a lot of baggage stamps from warm spots with low-intensity conflicts. A Lebanese mother passed down fluency in Arabic. Paramilitary adventure movies have provided most of his education.
Despite his outgoing extroversion, DeChalk is somewhat a pariah amidst Rocco's Retreads, but is determined to prove himself in combat.
